The Issues
The pandemic has had devastating impacts around the world. But sadly, individuals living in developing countries, such as Guatemala, have been the most impacted. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we have seen the following realities impacting the children in SERniña (REALgirl) programs:
- Plummeting literacy rates and escalating dropout rates, especially among girls, due to on-going school closures
- Increased poverty due to unemployment, especially among women
- Declining health indicators due to increased poverty, lack of food access, and reduced health services
- Increased domestic violence towards women and children.
At SERniña (REALgirl), we are working to change these realities. But to do so, we need your help!
How SERniña Is Responding To The Needs (2022 Projects & Activities)
EMPOWERMENT WORKSHOPS & RESOURCES FOR 400 CHILDREN
After the great success of our 2021 distance learning program, we will be continuing to deliver our "Blooming in Freedom" empowerment magazines to 400 children in our five partner communities. Each month SERniña Facilitators lead individual coaching calls with each participant to check in on well-being, safety and magazine understanding. In our Jocotenango project, we will also continue to run weekly virtual workshops for over 100 children. In our other communities, we will continue to strive to do as many in-person activities as is allowed in regards to gathering restrictions and school closures.

VIOLENCE PREVENTION & RESPONSE PROGRAM
In 2021, we launched our violence prevention and response program due to increasing rates of violence towards the children in our programs. It was an incredible success with over 57 individuals receiving therapeutic support. Despite its success, the need is beyond our current capacity - as there are over 150 children and 100+ mothers in need of this support in our programs. Your donations will help us grow this program in 2022.

HOLISTIC COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN EL HATO
We will also continue to deepen our work in the indigenous community of El Hato by providing increased support to 150 children and their families including equity and empowerment workshops for children, mothers and fathers, violence prevention and response support, family therapy, academic support and monthly food hampers. In 2022, we are also hoping to launch a literacy program for Mothers. All of our programs are run in a collaborative community center we share with Las Manos de Christine and Juntos Podemos. Note: Currently there is not enough space for us to fully run each of our programs, if we reach our donation goal, we will build an additional workshops space and therapy space to even further increase our support in this community.
